Sunday’s race was the third race in the Escape Velocity Spring Series. It was the Snake Road Race which included 11 laps of a 10 km circuit that featured a 700m long climb averaging 8 or 9 percent. Oliver (Oli) Evans was our lone rider for the day.
Keen to get the season started, Oli attacked a kilometre into the first lap on the climb and no one followed. He had 20 or 30 seconds by the time he crested. Although he didn’t want to be solo, no one followed. He decided to commit and rode the next 35km on his own
On the fourth lap he was joined by a group of five chasers. Their group eventually peaked at 8 riders. Over the next three laps, Oli set the pace over the climb and dropped a rider or two each lap. Eventually the break was left with four riders.
The gap steadily grew to 8 minutes. Oli attacked on the flat with 15 km to go. He swung to the right side of the road and accelerated past the reduced break.
He rolled in solo for the win.
