This weekend, three of our returning riders started their race preparation down in Tucson, AZ at the Colossal Caves Road Race. Alexis Cartier, Jure Rupnik and Marc-Antoine (M-A) Nadon raced 9 laps of a 15km undulating circuit, with a two minute uphill climb to the finish.
The race kicked off in old-fashion with Alexis taking the break along with Alec Cowen (Silber Pro Cycling) as soon as the flag dropped. The two of them rode to a 1min advantage over a chase group of 10 riders which included M-A and two other Silber riders (Travis Samuel and Nick Zukowsky). Alexis and Cowen were brought back after being out front for 50km.
On the climb, Silber threw an attack which was brought back by Alexis and then countered by Nick. M-A followed, and as they crested they had a significant gap; they pressed on. Working well together they drove their advantage up to 2 minutes over the next 60km. With one lap to go, Alexis broke away from the chase group to bridge to join M-A and Nick, along with one other rider. They made the junction at the base of the last climb and Alexis drove the pace to keep everyone in check. Being out-manned, Nick was forced to follow all the moves. M-A waited on the wheels until 200m to go to launch his sprint and to take his first road race win!
The team finished 1, 4 and 6 (M-A, Alexis and Jure respectively).
Next weekend the guys will take to the start line of the Tucson Bicycle Classic, a 3-day stage race and will be looking to continue their race preparation for the first UCI event in April at the Joe Martin Stage Race.
